We went to Polytechnic University on March 30th to learn about their innovative programs influencing the design and retail sectors.
We were able to sit in a state-of-the-art facility to watch 4-D presentations.
Check out the crazy glasses we had to wear...
We learned about their Institute of Textiles and Clothing which partners with schools in America and France to provide the most current trends in apparel.
We saw some of the computer labs where students were designing patterns, and witnessed, students in Hong Kong go on Facebook during class just like their American counter-parts...
We saw how they can work with virtual showrooms for retail outlets...
One of the coolest things we saw was the "Magic Mirror"- this mirror identifies clothing that you hold up to the mirror at the store and shows a lifestyle view of it, pairing it with other product to make an outfit. The second part of this technology allows customers in fitting rooms to identify whether a garment comes in additional colors and sizes.
We toured the workshops where design students create new styles.
We went through the labs where students and faculty work to weave new fabrics and sew clothing.
Finally, we ended our trip with a luncheon at the Four Seas Restaurant.
Our trip to Polytech-U was a great opportunity to see what it is like to study fashion, apparel, and retail in another country. We found it easy to relate to these students because we are all studying similar things the UW. It was also great to see how this school has utilized their proximity to the clothing manufacturing industry to provide a great resource to the clothing and retail industry.
