Today we spent the day sightseeing around Shanghai. We had beautiful weather for spending the day outside. First we went to a Buddhist Temple and participated in a Chinese Tea Ceremony. The Buddhist temple had a large jade Buddha as well as other Buddha statues. We were able to observe monks performing a ceremony and others praying. We then were able to try different tea at the tea house.
Next we went to a Chinese Garden with waterfalls, various trees and plants, and neat rock formations, as well as beautiful traditional Chinese buildings. Right outside of the gardens was a market with many shops and lots of things to shop for! Stephanie found jade Buddha stones for necklaces as well as a tea cup and Mandy found a copper Buddha statue. We had a great time shopping and found some good deals! After shopping we were on our way to the tallest building in Shanghai.
We took two elevators and an escalator to get to the 100th floor, and from there we had the most amazing view of Shanghai. We ended our sightseeing at a Chinese Wal-Mart. We had a great time looking at all of the different food and items available, including blueberry and kiwi flavored potato chips, and shrimp flavored Pringles. We then took a quick trip back to the hotel to get ready for an Alumni event with Chancellor Biddy Martin. We were able to hear the chancellor speak and meet other faculty at the dinner, at to end the night we all sang “varsity.” After returning to the hotel but before bed, we wandered the streets of Shanghai around our hotel to see a little more of the city before returning to the U.S.
