The biggest cultural difference of the day was the bus ride from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.
Since Hong Kong is not part of China, we had to get off the bus and go through customs and security then get back on the bus. (Shenzhen is only an 1 1/2 hours away!) Luckily, we missed the crowds and we were only in line for a little. However, the tour guide told us that many people from Hong Kong work in China and have to go through that process every day! It seemed so strange to us, and really was one of the times that it really settled in our minds that we were immersed in a completely different culture!
We finished off the night at the Peking Garden with a big family style meal with authentic Chinese food! Handmade noodles and all! Below is a picture of the chef making noodles by stretching, twisting and smacking a large roll of dough on the table. The picture on the right is of one of part of our meal. It was called Beggars Chicken. It is a whole chicken covered in mud and baked in the ground. The mud had to be broken off by hitting it with a hammer. We al had a lot of fun watching our friends smack the chicken with hammers. Overall, it was an exciting day full of new cultural experiences.
