We started the day at the Li & Fung office. We heard great presentations from Deborah Vinson (our amazing host) and Bruce Bergstrom. Then we traveled by bus to Shenzhen – our first trip to China. We immediately saw the differences between China and Hong Kong. In China, they drive on the same side of the road as we do in the U.S., but in Hong Kong, they drive on the opposite side. There was a lot less English present in Shenzhen. We were used to signs being in both languages in Hong Kong, but that wasn’t the case in Shenzhen. We had a great buffet lunch at a hotel and then we arrived at the Li & Fung office. We heard a Kohl’s product presentation and learned a lot about the individual brands at Kohl’s. We also learned a lot about technical design.
We made a quick stop at a Carrefour in Shenzhen. It’s kind of like a Kmart or Wal-Mart. The deli section was interesting because there was a lot of live seafood and many other creatures we’re not used to eating. We had fun looking at all the different kinds of foods they had, like blueberry Lays potato chips and shrimp flavored Pringles.
Then we headed back to Hong Kong for dinner at the Peking Garden restaurant. This was an elaborate dinner with about a dozen courses. They showed us how they make noodles, which was quite amazing because they started with a ball of dough and after twisting it and throwing it in the air for a while it turned into hundreds of small noodles. We had Peking duck, which was really good. We also had Beggar’s Chicken, which is wrapped in leaves and baked in the ground. It had really good flavor and was really tender.
