Friday: WalMart Experience

On Friday we got to explore a Walmart in Shanghai.  We spent about 45 minutes checking out the store and all of the different products that are offered in China.  Below are some of the most interesting things I saw.

This is a picture of dried beef that was piled in bins.  It reminded me of what a display of packaged socks would look like in America.  I noticed that the Chinese like to touch and inspect all the product that they buy.  This set up definitely allowed for this type of shopping.

The first picture shows various types of sea weeds.  The bins were located right next to the fresh fish and live fish tanks.  I can't even begin to describe the smell of the fish and sea weed together.  I stood near the sea weed for a few minutes watching people scoop piles of sea weed into bags and wondered if I had inadvertently eaten any sea weed since we have been in China.

This picture is of a customer who attempted to get a life fish out of the tank but it escaped and was flopping around on the floor of Walmart.  The man scooped up the live fish and continued shopping.  It was definitely a sight to see.

This Walmart had shuttle busses that picked up people from all over the city to bring them to the Walmart to do their shopping.  While waiting for the coach bus to pick us back up we saw two shuttle busses full of people get dropped off at Walmart.  Because very few Chinese people own cars, the shuttle bus is the only way to do major shopping that Walmart offers.

I can't remember what either of these baskets were filled with.   The Walmart reminded me of a local market with exotic foods that are probably extremely common for Chinese consumers.
