Day 6 - Brenna & Kate

Samples of the knitwear manufactured at Love + Hope

Today we toured a denim factory and a knitting factory in Hong Kong.  At the denim factory, they manufactured rolls of denim, which they shipped all over the world to be further processed into jeans, jackets, etc.  An intricate process is necessary to produce the denim. In addition, we saw how they produced different types of washes for denim - stonewashed, and distressed.  For the stonewashed denim they actually put rocks inside the washer that dissolve.  For distressed, an employee manually distressed the denim with a tool.

Then we toured Love + Hope, a sweater factory.  This factory is special in that they treat their employees very well and pay fair wages.  It was built to bring some factory work and restore the knitting talent in Hong Kong that has been outsourced to China and other countries due to the high costs in Hong Kong.  It is a very nice environment to work in - they have air conditioning, good lighting, and a special technological check-in system for each garment and worker that keeps all workers efficient and helps them improve.  Currently they do business with a few small luxury companies, and they also sell products with their own Hope + Love label in the luxury market in Hong Kong and online.
